Second Fire of the Day - This Time an Apartment on Garst Mill Rd

Monday, September 19, 2011 Less then six hours after clearing from the fire at The Pines apartment complex, Southwest county units were alerted for smoke in the building and alarms sounding at The Villages on Garst Mill Road.  Wagon 3, Ladder 3, and Engine 3 responded on the run staffed with both career and volunteer personnel.  EMS 2 (EMS supervisor) again was the first arriving unit and found a 3 story apartment building with nothing showing.  Within a minute the call was upgraded to a working fire due to smoke coming from an apartment on the first floor. Wagon 3 and Ladder 3 reported to the Alpha side of the structure.  The Wagon crew stretched a 1 3/4 inch attack line and the Ladder crew grabbed tools and prepared for a search.  The Engine crew caught the hydrant and stretched a 5 inch supply line from the Charlie side of the building to the Wagon. After forcing the door, heavy smoke conditions were found in the apartment. A small fire was found in the kitchen area and extinguished. Two dogs were found and removed from the apartment.  All other searches were found to be clear. With the fire marked under control in fifteen minutes, command held the units from 3, 7, and 11 to finish up with clean up and assist fire marshals. Units from 3 cleared in just under two hours.
